Comprehensive Health Services Supports Medical Care for National Responder Support Camp in Corpus Christi, Texas

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, the initial disaster response involved a call to action by the Local, State, and Federal Governments. During this stabilizing operation, the focus was to provide emergency services and life-sustaining support, such as food, water, and safety to all disaster victims.

In support of this initiative, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) established National Responder Support Camps (NRSC) throughout Texas to ensure that the basic needs of emergency response personnel were met, including shelter, food, and medical care. According to the Department of Homeland Security, NRSCs were established to support FEMA missions. Their primary purpose is to improve FEMA’s “ability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards,” during presidentially-declared disasters. To support these FEMA missions, Responder Support Camps are built, assembled, and operated by contractors. (Source:

Comprehensive Health Services is proud to serve and support the medical needs of these emergency responders. Currently, a small group of our medical professionals are assigned to the medical unit at the Responder Support Camp in Corpus Christi, TX. This camp houses approximately 1,000 Federal Responders.

Located onsite, the camp’s medical unit is staffed for and supplied with provisions to administer medical care and stand-by medical services to disaster responders. The staff – 1 Nurse and 2 Emergency Medical Technicians – triage medical needs; make determinations for immediate treatment; and collect and record medical treatment-related information for all responders who seek medical attention. Comprehensive Health Services provides ongoing support to this responder population 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. Expands Medical Services Line of Business with Health and Human Service Contract

Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. (CHSi) was awarded the Temporary Shelter Staffing contract by the Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR), Division of Children’s Services within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This award has expanded our provision of established medical services to include the 24/7 operation of a shelter for unaccompanied minor children who have entered the U.S.

CHSi ramped-up operations this spring and summer to provide medical support and staffing services by recruiting, vetting, hiring, and on-boarding personnel within a 6-week period. Shelter staff were recruited from the local community. Positions included case managers, mental health clinicians, registered nurses, physicians, teachers, and youth care workers. Because most of the children are from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, and speak only Spanish, all staff are required to be fluent in Spanish and English.

The average stay for a child at the shelter is approximately 30 days. During their stay, CHSi provides medical care, educational programs, counseling, recreation, case management, and reunification services. The goal of the program is to place the children with vetted and qualified sponsors and family members, while they await their immigration proceedings.

Jeff Walker, Director of Operations at the shelter, says, “We are extremely proud of the work we do every day to help make these children’s lives better, by providing a safe place, compassionate care, and opportunities for a better future.”

CHSi Sponsors Runway to Hope Gala for Children with Cancer

Cape Canaveral, Florida. Sunday, July 6, 2014 is a day Susanne Cummings, CHSi Small Business Liaison Officer, and her family will never forget. It is the day they received the news that their 10 month old baby girl, Isabella, had a very rare form of pediatric cancer. Over the past two years, Isabella has had 22 surgeries. Throughout it all Susanne squeezed in time for family and, remarkably, for CHSi.

During this challenging time, Susanne discovered Runway to Hope. Runway to Hope serves Central Florida families impacted by pediatric cancer. Susanne and her family benefitted from the financial family assistance program.

“Runway to Hope made it possible for us to focus on what really mattered, our daughter and our family. It was just the help we needed at just the right time.”

Susanne Cummings, Contracts Administrator and Small Business Liaison Officer, CHSi

In tribute to Susanne and her family, CHSi is contributing $5,000 as a Silver Sponsor of the Runway to Hope’s Spring Fashion Soiree to be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek on Saturday, May 21. The gala event features a fashion show with more than 150 children ages 2 to 18 as models, all of whom are currently in treatment or survivors of pediatric cancer. Isabella will join other models and their celebrity escorts, including Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Kirkpatrick, former member of *NSYNC, who will serve as escorts. (For more information on the event go to:

“We are honored to have an opportunity to support such a worthwhile cause that has been such a blessing to a member of our CHSi family and to our neighbors and community.”

Gary Palmer, CHSi President

During 2015 while Susanne and her family were facing the unimaginable, she continued to work when she could. Her efforts resulted in the award of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), 2016 Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence for Services, having exceeded all small business goal measures.

“I needed to continue to work. I wanted to be with my baby, but we couldn’t afford to lose my income. I spoke with Gary, and he was so supportive. He told me not to worry and to do what I could. I worked from the hospital, from home, or anywhere and anytime I could. It was a healthy distraction that took my thoughts away, even for just a few minutes, from the fear that was consuming.”

Isabella, now 2 and half, has been cancer free since October 1, 2015. Susanne and her family are breathing a sigh of relief and enjoying their healthy and vivacious daughter.
